Enough to submerge the bottom of the downstem by about a quarter to half an inch - no more. Too much water and you'll get backsplash; too little and you lose filtration. Do a test pull without lighting anything to check the bubble action before loading your bowl.
Note: If you have a percolator, add water through the mouthpiece until the perc's slits are just barely covered. Unless you want to run it as a dry catcher instead (it’ll still catch debris, you just don’t get the extra filtration).
Grind your herb, pack the bowl loosely enough for good airflow, and add water to the base. Light the edge of the bowl (not the center) while slowly inhaling through the mouthpiece. Pull the bowl out once the chamber fills with smoke and inhale deeply to clear it. Start with smaller pulls if you're new to bongs.
Take the pieces apart first and drop each one in a bag with isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt. Shake for a minute, then rinse with warm water. Our cleaning caps seal the openings so you can shake each component individually without making a mess.
