Choosing the Right Bong Bowl at VITAE Glass
Picking the right bowl for your bong isn't as simple as grabbing whatever looks cool. Yeah, that’s part of it. But joint size, gender, and capacity all affect how the piece fits your setup and how your hits feel.
Joint Size (14mm vs 18mm)
Joint size refers to the diameter of the opening where the bowl connects to your bong's bong downstem. Our system runs on 14mm joints, the most common size. It’s the sweet spot balance between airflow and portability.
An 18mm joint pulls more air. You’ll still find this size on larger, heavier pieces. Measure your downstem opening before ordering so you don't end up with a bowl that won't properly seat.
Do You Need a Male or Female Bowl?
This one trips people up, but it's simple. A male bong bowl has a tapered end that slides into the downstem. A female bowl fits over the outside of the joint. Most standard bongs (ours included) use male bowls that drop into a female downstem.
Bowl Capacity and Design
How much herb you can pack depends on the bowl's depth and width. Our Leaf Bowl holds 0.3 to 0.7 grams, plenty for solo sessions and enough for sharing. It's a single-hole design, so there’s less herb falling through and easier cleaning compared to multi-hole bowls.
We also carry the Magnetic Bowl Piece by Bowlz, which is totally different. It’s made from anodized 6061 aluminum and splits in half via magnets, so you can clean the airflow channel without pipe cleaners or soaking. Faster heat dissipation than glass, too, so it cools down quicker between hits.

How do you pack the perfect bowl?
Grind your herb to a medium consistency (not powder-fine, no chunks either, though). Drop it into the bong bowl loosely and press down gently with your finger. You want a little airflow, or you won’t be able to even hit the bong. Light the edge of the bowl (cornering) instead of torching the center - that way you get more hits of pure green. This is good etiquette in shared circles.
What's the difference between a bong bowl and a dab nail/banger?
A bong bowl holds dry herb. A dab nail or banger holds concentrates like wax, shatter, or live resin and needs to be heated to a way higher temperature. They're not interchangeable. The extract will just melt through a standard bowl, and dry herb won't vaporize on a banger.
So, can I put concentrate in my bong bowl?
No. A standard glass bong bowl isn't designed for concentrates. The heat profile is wrong and you'll waste product. You can fill a bowl with flower and put a little concentrate on top for a rip that packs a punch. Otherwise, grab a banger or check out our dab bundles.
What material are bowls made of?
The Leaf Bowl is hand-blown lab-grade borosilicate glass. It’s non-porous, heat-resistant, and won't affect flavor. The Magnetic Bowl Piece by Bowlz is anodized food-safe 6061 aluminum, which is extremely durable and dissipates heat faster than glass.
How can I be sure I'm getting the right size bowl for my bong?
All VITAE bongs use a 14mm male joint. Measure the inner diameter of your downstem opening if you're shopping for a third-party bong. 14mm is roughly the width of a dime, and 18mm is closer to a nickel. You can also reach out to our customer service team if you’re unsure.
What types of bong bowls are available at VITAE?
We carry two options right now. The Leaf Bowl is a borosilicate glass piece in green or pink with a single-hole design. One comes free with every bong base purchase. The aluminum Magnetic Bowl Piece by Bowlz splits apart for easy cleaning. Comes in black, metallic blue, and rose gold.
How do I clean my bong's bowl?
Soak it in isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt for a few minutes, give it a shake, and rinse with warm water. The more often you clean it, the less work it takes. Make sure you empty the bowl after every session, as leaving burnt flower in the bowl is how you end up with tough gunk.
Should I add a screen/filter to the bowl?
Screens prevent small pieces of herb from pulling through the hole into the water, keeping your base cleaner. Our Leaf Bowl's single-hole design already minimizes this, but a small glass or metal screen can help if you grind fine. Or, upgrade to a 14mm ash catcher for even better filtration!
