What’s the Point of an Ash Catcher?

This is a great upgrade for any of our glass bongs for sale because it’ll save you time on cleaning and keep your rips smoother. It’s a preliminary filtration system that prevents ash from the bowl from making its way into the main bong chamber. That’s where the name comes from.

Ash catchers are typically made of glass and contain percolation systems to further sift and cool the smoke for a better smoking experience. They fit onto the bong's joint and have an additional joint where the bowl can be attached.

Sizing Your Ash Catcher

Ash catchers generally come in three standard sizes: 10mm, 14mm, and 18mm. Here's how you can determine the right size:

  • Match to the gender of your bong's joint: Bongs have either male or female joints. If the joint on your bong is male, it means that you will need an ash catcher with a female joint, and vice versa.
  • Measure the diameter of your bong's joint: For example, if the joint of your bong measures 14mm in diameter, you will need a 14mm ash catcher.

Getting the right-sized ash catcher ensures it fits properly and that it functions effectively. But whether you’re looking for a 14mm ash catcher or 18mm ash catcher, we have you covered at VITAE Glass.

Frequently asked questions

How does an ash catcher work?

It attaches between the bong bowl and the bong downstem, capturing ash as you hit your piece so that it never has the chance to get into the main bong base or the percolators inside it. This makes your life SO much easier as far as cleaning goes.

Will ash catchers make rips smoother?

They filter smoke earlier and keep buildup out of the bong, which might lead to smoother hits. But you’ll want to upgrade to a percolator bong for the smoothest rips possible.

What are the different types of ash catchers?

You’ll see dry catchers, water-filled catchers, and percolated styles. There are male and female styles, and different angles. It just comes down to what fits your piece and your preferences for airflow vs filtration.

Should I go with a 45° or 90° piece?

Choose a 45-degree ash catcher if the joint on your bong comes out at an angle to ensure it sits correctly and doesn't tip over. A 90-degree ash catcher is best if the joint on your bong is vertical and comes straight out at a 90-degree angle. It’ll sit upright and lined up with the bong.

How much are ash catchers?

Ours here at VITAE Glass range from $50-$70, but you get what you pay for. They’re carefully crafted from premium borosilicate glass so you’re getting an accessory that will stand the test of time. We currently have a buy 2 get 1 free deal, too!

How to use an ash catcher?

Slide it onto your bong’s joint, add a little water, and then put your bowl piece in the ash catcher. From there it’s just like any other session!

Should you put water in an ash catcher?

Yeah, assuming it’s a normal ash catcher. There are also dry catchers, which work without water. Ours are designed to be used either way. Just don’t use too much water, as it’ll affect performance.

How to clean an ash catcher?

  1. Empty the Ash Catcher: First, you'll need to remove any residual ash or debris from the ash catcher.
  2. Deconstruct: If your ash catcher has multiple parts, take it apart to ensure a thorough clean.
  3. Pre-Rinse: Rinse the ash catcher with warm water to remove ash and help loosen up any stuck-on residue.
  4. Alcohol and Salt: Fill the ash catcher with isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt. The combination works as an abrasive to scrub away the resin.
  5. Shake: Cover all openings of the ash catcher and place in a zip lock bong. Give it a good shake. The salt will scrub against the inner walls of the ash catcher, removing the residue, while the alcohol will dissolve the tar.
  6. Rinse: After a thorough shaking, rinse the ash catcher with warm water again.
  7. Dry: Allow your ash catcher to dry fully before using it again. Water trapped in a bong or pipe can lead to mold growth.

Who makes the best ash catchers?

VITAE Glass is your best bet because we use thick borosilicate glass. Many of our ash catchers have percolators built into them, too. They’re backed by free 30-day returns as well. Our packaging is carbon neutral as an added benefit!

Do ash catchers fit all water pipes?

No - fit depends on joint size and angles. Refer to our sizing guide above or get in touch with our customer service team if you have questions. Any of the ash catchers above will fit our modular bong, though.
