Percolators Explained: Honeycomb, UFO, Matrix and Tree Percs, and How to Choose Before Black Friday

Prices and specs verified on vitaeglass.com, October 7, 2026.
Methodology: these ranked recommendations are based on the current Vitae Glass catalog verified October 7, 2026, on the diffusion design of each perc as described in its own catalog listing, and on our workshop experience since 2019 building these percs as separate 50mm modular sections that can be swapped, compared and cleaned one at a time.

The types of percolators that matter most for a smooth, cool draw are honeycomb, UFO, matrix and tree percs. Each one breaks smoke into smaller bubbles so more smoke touches water, but they differ in bubble size, drag and cleaning effort. The right choice depends on how smooth you want the draw and how much maintenance you accept.

What does a percolator actually do?
A percolator, often shortened to perc, forces smoke through holes or slits under water so one large bubble becomes many small ones. Smaller bubbles have more total surface area for the same volume of smoke, so more smoke contacts water in the same short trip. That contact is what cools the draw and helps water catch heavier particles before they travel further.
The Leafly cannabis glossary entry on percolators defines a percolator in plain terms as the part of a bong or rig that diffuses smoke to cool and filter it, and notes that different designs produce different bubbles and filtration. The Ganjapreneur percolator guide makes the same surface area point, smaller bubbles mean more contact with water, which is the whole mechanical idea behind every design in this post.
Two tradeoffs follow from that physics, and they show up in every perc below. More diffusion usually means more drag, because smoke has to push through more, smaller openings. More intricate glass usually means slower cleaning, because residue collects in the same small openings that made the bubbles small. A good Black Friday buy is not the perc with the most holes. It is the perc whose diffusion, drag and cleaning profile matches how you actually use a piece.
In a fixed bong, you choose once and live with that balance. In our modular system, each perc is its own 50mm borosilicate section with a minimum 5mm wall, so you can start with one perc, add a second later, and clean each section on its own. That swap and compare option is the firsthand difference this guide is built on.
How does a honeycomb perc work, and who is it for?
A honeycomb perc is a flat disc pierced with many small holes, spread evenly across the disc. Smoke has to pass up through the whole field of holes at once, so it arrives above the disc as a broad sheet of fine bubbles. It is efficient, it is visually striking in use, and it adds noticeable drag if the disc is stacked or the water level is high.
Honeycomb is the perc we build into bases, where its strength matters most. The Voyager Base, $165, pairs an inline downstem with a large honeycomb disc inside a beaker base, so diffusion starts before smoke even leaves the base. The full set built on it, the 16" Voyager UFO Bong at $329, then adds a UFO stage on top, for three stages in total.
For maximum honeycomb, THC Base, $115, stacks three honeycomb discs in a straight base. Its catalog listing describes the trio as roughly a hundred holes in total across the three discs, each hole filtering and cooling as smoke passes. That is a specific, countable design, not a vague smoothness claim, and it is why this base suits people who want diffusion first and do not mind a firmer pull.
Best for: buyers who prioritize filtration and a cooler draw, and who mostly use one setup at home where a base perc is easy to rinse after each session.

How does a UFO perc work, and why is it so popular?
A UFO perc is a domed, saucer shaped diffuser with slits around its edge. Smoke travels up into the dome, then exits sideways through those slits into water, spreading out in a ring of bubbles. The shape gives strong diffusion without the tight pull of a dense honeycomb field, which is why it balances smoothness and draw so well for many people.
Our catalog describes the UFO slits in The UFO Mouthpiece, $145, as angled and flame polished, with an hourglass ice catcher stationed above the perc. Those two details are specific to this build, the angled slits shape how bubbles leave the dome, and the ice catcher gives a second, optional cooling step after diffusion.
If you want UFO diffusion as a separate module you can add to an existing set, the Dual UFO Percolator, $119, is a 6 inch attachment with two UFO percs in one section, and the Mini UFO Percolator, $79, is the smaller single version. Both listings note that you need one more connector ring to attach the module to a regular set, a practical cost to count before Black Friday rather than discover after.
Best for: most buyers, most of the time. If you can only pick one perc type to start, UFO gives the clearest step up in smoothness without committing to the highest drag or the hardest clean.

How does a matrix perc work?
A matrix perc is a cylindrical diffuser covered with a grid of vertical and horizontal slits. Smoke exits in many directions at once through that cross cut surface, producing a dense column of very fine bubbles and a distinctive, bright look in the glass. Of the four main types here, matrix usually produces the finest bubble field, and it also asks the most of cleaning, because residue can settle in so many small intersecting cuts.
The catalog listing for the Dual Matrix Percolator, $129, describes its cuts as cross directional and polished, with two matrix percs in the one module for double diffusion. The smaller option is the Mini Matrix Percolator, $79, a single matrix section at the same module price as the other mini percs.
A useful workshop observation from building these since 2019: matrix rewards correct water level more than the other types. Too little water and some slits sit dry and do nothing, too much and drag climbs quickly. Fill until the matrix grid is just covered, then adjust by a few millimetres at a time. That one habit changes this perc more than any accessory will.
Best for: experienced users who want maximum diffusion and visual effect, and who will clean the module separately and regularly rather than letting residue build in the grid.

How does a tree perc work, and is it fragile?
A tree perc has a central stem with arms branching out and down, each arm carrying slits near its end. Smoke travels down the arms and exits through several separated points at once, so bubbles start spread out rather than in one cluster. It is one of the oldest perc designs, and the look is unmistakable.
The fragility concern is real for traditional tree percs with free hanging arms, which is why our design differs in a specific way. The catalog for the Dual 8 Arm Tree Percolator, $99, states that its arms are fused directly onto the glass floor for added durability, and are cut vertically rather than horizontally for smoother airflow. That gives 16 arms across the dual module, with each arm anchored instead of suspended. The smaller Mini 8 Arm "Jellyfish" Tree Percolator, $79, is the single, 8 arm version.
Even with anchored arms, treat a tree module as the most delicate of the four in handling. Store it in its foam, clean it as its own short section, and do not stack weight on it in a case. In a modular system that handling is easier, because the tree section separates from the tall build for storage instead of staying at the top of a 20 inch piece.
Best for: buyers who love the classic tree look and a spread out, open bubble pattern, and who are careful handlers willing to store one module properly.

Which percolator should you buy first for Black Friday?
Methodology in one line: ranked by diffusion balanced against drag and cleaning effort for a first perc purchase, using the verified Vitae Glass catalog prices and designs above, October 7, 2026.
- UFO, best first buy for most people. Start with The UFO Mouthpiece at $145 if you need a top section, or the Mini UFO Percolator at $79 if you already own a compatible base and mouthpiece. Balanced diffusion, moderate drag, moderate cleaning.
- Honeycomb, best if filtration comes first. Built into The Voyager Base at $165 or THC Base at $115, so there is no separate perc module to buy. Strongest base level diffusion, firmer pull.
- Matrix, best for maximum fine bubbles. Dual Matrix Percolator at $129 for a dual stage, or Mini Matrix Percolator at $79 for a single. Highest cleaning commitment of the four.
- Tree, best for classic form and an open pattern. Dual 8 Arm Tree Percolator at $99 for 16 anchored arms, or the mini 8 arm version at $79. Most delicate handling.
If you want several types in one purchase, the 23" Voyager + Dual Perc Bong, $420, lets you choose Dual UFO, Dual Matrix or Dual Tree as the middle section, on top of the Voyager base with its inline and honeycomb stages, finished with a UFO mouthpiece. Its listing counts five percolators in that 23 inch build, and notes the set also reconfigures as the 16 inch Voyager.
Our earlier comparison, Modular vs. Fixed Bongs: Which Is the Better Black Friday Buy?, explains why being able to swap these percs instead of buying a whole new fixed piece changes the Black Friday maths. Our material guide, Borosilicate Glass 101: Why Thickness and Material Matter, covers why the 5mm borosilicate wall around these intricate cuts matters for durability.
Product block: start with one perc, add the rest later The 16" Starter Set, $249, pairs a Classic Beaker base with a UFO mouthpiece, a protective travel case and 1 year extended warranty on the glass per its catalog listing, verified October 7, 2026. It gives you a working UFO stage from day one, and every mini and dual perc above stays compatible as you expand.

How do you clean each percolator type?
Cleaning is where modular design pays for itself, and it differs by perc:
- Honeycomb in a base: rinse the base on its own while residue is fresh. The disc holes are small and numerous, about a hundred across the three discs in THC Base, so a soak is far easier before residue hardens in the field.
- UFO: separate the mouthpiece or module and soak it alone. The angled, flame polished slits in The UFO Mouthpiece clear well with a warm rinse and a soak, because there are fewer, larger openings than a matrix grid.
- Matrix: soak longest and rinse most carefully. The cross cut grid in the Dual Matrix Percolator has the most small intersections of any perc here, so give it time rather than tools, never push anything into the slits.
- Tree: soak the section upright and handle it by the tube, not the arms. Even with arms fused to the glass floor in our dual tree design, a short separate section is safer to clean than a tree perc fixed inside a tall piece.
Every module separates at the connector ring, so no perc in this guide has to be cleaned while attached to a full height build. That is the practical reason perc choice and cleaning choice are the same decision in a modular system, and separate, harder decisions in a fixed one.
One tree is planted for every module sold through One Tree Planted, and orders ship in recycled and recyclable packaging. Choosing a perc you will actually maintain, rather than the most intricate one on sale, is also the more sustainable choice, because a module kept in use for years replaces nothing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which percolator is smoothest, honeycomb, UFO, matrix or tree? In our catalog builds, a stacked honeycomb and a dual matrix produce the finest bubble fields, for example the three discs and roughly hundred holes in THC Base at $115, and the two cross cut percs in the Dual Matrix Percolator at $129. Smoothness in practice also depends on drag and water level, so a UFO at $145 for the mouthpiece version is the smoother experience for many first time buyers because the draw stays easier.
Does more percolators always mean a better bong? No. The 23 inch Voyager build counts five percolators, but each added stage adds drag and cleaning time as well as diffusion. For a daily piece, one well chosen perc, such as a Mini UFO Percolator at $79 added to a base you already own, often gets used and cleaned more consistently than a maximum stack.
Can I swap a matrix perc for a tree perc in the same bong? Yes, in a modular Vitae Glass build. The Dual Matrix Percolator at $129, the Dual 8 Arm Tree Percolator at $99 and the Dual UFO Percolator at $119 are separate 50mm sections that attach with a connector ring, and each listing notes you need one more ring to attach the module to a regular set. In a fixed bong, the perc is built in and cannot be swapped.
Why do mini percolators all cost $79? The Mini UFO Percolator, the Mini Matrix Percolator and the Mini 8 Arm "Jellyfish" Tree Percolator are each listed at $79 in the catalog verified October 7, 2026. Same module price across the three types makes comparison a matter of diffusion, drag and cleaning preference, not budget, which is intentional for a first perc experiment.
Which percolator is hardest to clean? Matrix, because its vertical and horizontal slits create many small intersecting chambers, as described in its dual module listing. Honeycomb is next, due to the number of small holes in each disc. UFO and tree modules clean more quickly as separate sections, provided tree arms are handled by the tube and soaked rather than scrubbed.
